I’m the Barnyard Chicken Around Here

I’m surprised I’m even telling you what’s new around our place. It doesn’t quite fit with my image of myself to say that I own chickens.

Builderman has gone on and on about wanting chickens until I said, “Fine- as long as I don’t have to see them, smell them or help in any way at all… get your chickens.” He called me on Friday morning and said, “I need a favor. I need a poultry pick-up.” My response was “You’ve got to be kidding me, right?” No. No he wasn’t kidding.

This is what I picked up at the post office- who knew they ship real live peeps in the mail!

I’m going to quote my friend Diane who’s husband recently decided they need pack goats. Yes, you heard that right. She writes, “Maybe your first question, when you are finished laughing, is: Why did Rod and Diane get a goat? And I'm not gonna lie. There is a small part of me that is slightly embarrassed by the fact that we own a goat. That is probably why I usually refer to him as the "puppy-goat." I guess I have a certain type of person in mind when I think of people who own goats. I need to get over my biases. So do you.”

Oh, Diane, I know exactly how you feel. At least I can commiserate with one of my fellow bloggers. And I will quietly admit that the little peeps are cute for now. I'm thinking that's a temporary state.

Adorable. But they will turn into big ugly chickens for sure. Will you eat them or use them for eggs...or pets?

oh so cute...but they will grow up...are they layers or fryers?
that sounds horrible, doesn't it?!
so, are you getting a rooster?

UPDATE to questions: I don't want to know any of the details, but I understand he plans to have eggs and meat as well, so there's a rooster in the gang. These are not pets! I like kittys and puppies myself.

HaHa. You're funny.

I can just see the cars stopping in front of your house and beeping because there is a chicken in the middle of the road...Have Fun!!!

Hopefully they won't all turn out to be roosters. Some of he people that sort them don't do a very good job. I have one chicken.

When we moved from Chicago to the country in the west, we had both goats, sheep and chickens. You can take a girl out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the girl.

I think they are WAY cuter than a puppy-goat. But how much can you pack on those little buggers?

I'm thinking you need a batch of bunnies to go along with them!

Too darn cute!

This is so funny to me b/c just last week One Fine Man said that since we live in the county, we should get some chickens so we don't have to buy eggs anymore.
We used to get fresh eggs from my parents when they lived closer. I'm not "yolking" when I say fresh tastes better.
Please keep us posted on this!!!

First of all, I am so thankful for your visit to my blog, so that in turn I could visit yours. I have really enjoyed reading through your latest posts. This latest one had me smiling the whole way through. My daughter and her husband, in looking for another house to live in, wanted one where her husband and son could raise chickens. To me that was just plain wierd, but not to him. Then I read your post and just smiled.

As for the grandparenting aspect of your life...it will be better than you can even anticipate. Congratulations!!

If my husband would just promise to take care of them too, I would be all about chickens! I read a report about what all they give chickens to make them grow and it was not good! The ones without cost a fortune.

We definatley plan for Punkin to have a cow one day. Nothing better to teach responsibility than feeding a calf every day and then getting to sell it one day and reap the rewards.

Can't wait!

Looking forward to Omelet Mondays and Quiche Tuesdays with all the eggs you will be gathering.

Grandmother raised chickens and it was my job to feed them and gather the eggs. I really took a lot of pride in helping, and those of some fond memories.

I just keep backing up reading your posts to get caught up! How I've missed you. And I'm SO jealous of the chicks--I LOVE them!
